The Importance of Scalp Protection

Sun haircare is a topic that we discuss with our clients every day as summer kicks in. We get it: after a seemingly endless winter, the urge to worship the sun is all-powerful. But the sun can be an unforgiving deity. When it comes to sun protection, most people focus on their skin, often forgetting about their scalp, hairline, and parting. However, these areas are just as susceptible to sunburn, which can lead to several issues, including traumatising the hair follicle, potentially resulting in hair loss, peeling, and long-term damage such as an increased risk of skin cancer. Protecting these often-overlooked areas is crucial for overall skin health.

Wearing a sunhat, especially during the most intense hours of sun, 11 am – 3 pm, can work wonders!

How to Protect Your Scalp, Hairline, and Parting

1. Wear a Hat
One of the most effective ways to protect your scalp and hairline is by wearing a hat. Choose a wide-brimmed hat for maximum coverage, and make sure it’s made from tightly woven fabric to block out UV rays.

2. Apply sunscreen directly to your parting, crown and exposed areas
Ultrasun 50spf face and scalp mist is ideal. Non-greasy, transparent, UVA & UVB protection. Available in @boots. Otherwise, use whatever spf you have already and apply directly to your parting, crown etc

3. Opt for UV-Protective Hair Products
Many hair products now offer UV protection. These can be sprays, leave-in conditioners, or serums that help shield your hair and scalp from the sun’s harmful rays.

4. Seek Shade
Whenever possible, stay in the shade, especially during peak hours of 11 am – 3 pm. This reduces your overall exposure to UV rays.

6. Regular Scalp Checks
Perform regular checks on your scalp for any signs of sun damage, such as new moles, spots, or unusual changes. Early detection of skin issues is key to preventing serious conditions.

Sun haircare, and protecting your scalp, hairline, and parting from the sun is a vital part of overall skin care. By incorporating hats, sunscreen, UV-protective hair products, and seeking shade, you can reduce the risk of sunburn and long-term damage. Taking these precautions helps maintain healthy skin and hair.

Remember, a comprehensive approach to sun protection should include all parts of your body, not just the obvious ones.
